Working in America
A society where everyone can make a life and a living with human dignity.
Dedicated in honor of Studs Terkel and Alan Saks; the Working in America initiative is a nationally traveling photography exhibition, multi-platform model and creative tool, sharing stories of “work.” Through the American worker, WIA addresses unprecedented inequality, struggling post-industrial cities, systemic racism, gender issues and weak public systems.
G+A worked with Project& to bring this initiative to life through a new identity, brand, visual language and communications across platforms. We also worked with award-winning architecture firm Studio Gang on the exhibit itself, and Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Lynsey Addario showcasing profiles of 24 people from 17 states ranging in ages from 21 to 87.
“It is about a search, too, for daily meaning as well as
daily bread, for recognition as well as cash, for
astonishment rather than torpor; in short, for a sort of
life rather than a Monday through Friday sort of dying.”
STUDS TERKEL
I think most of us are looking for a calling, not a job.
Most of us, like the assembly-line worker,
have jobs that are too small for our spirit.
Jobs are not big enough for people.
