Sandro: Crowns

Celebrating the diversity, artistry and power of Black women’s hair.

Crowns: My Hair, My Soul, My Freedom celebrates the social endurance, cultural heritage and self-expression of Black women through their hairstyles. Each image is based on each individual’s “hair story,” documenting the many unspoken ways in which Black women assert their autonomy through their physical appearance.

This large-format book is fully loaded with conceptual detail and accents. As a first impression, the slipcase showcases an iconic portrait — layered with a raw and emotional poem — creating a struggle for the viewer to read. The book also boasts complete ink coverage, where all elements are a shade of black. Even the page edges are covered with black gilding.
